So far this year, according to a recent snapshot from the Ottawa Police Service, the top five communities most targeted for hate motivated crimes are the Black Community, the Jewish Community, the LGBTQ+ Community, the Muslim Community and the Arab Community (West Asian, Middle Eastern, North African).
If hate crimes in the city are a major concern for you, come to this forum to become better informed about:
- The role elected municipal officials (Mayor, City Councillors, School Trustees) play in addressing hate incidents and hate crimes in our city
- How hate has targeted multiple communities in our city over the last 5 years (Jewish, Black, LGBTQ+, Muslim, Arab, and East Asian specifically)
- Key questions to ask candidates for municipal office to gage their commitment to fighting hate in our city
- Gaps in how hate incidents and crimes are currently handled by municipal police services (Ottawa Police Service, OC Transpo Special Constables, By-Law Officers), elected officials and local media. We will unpack these issues using a real case study of a violent attack on a senior Black Muslim woman who wears hijab that led to hate crimes charges being laid and is going to trial this November
- The lack of support for victims of these crimes in our city.
- How we as neighbours in this city can better support one another in the face of hate
This forum is organized by Muslim Link and Suradway Parents Association of Ottawa. All are welcome to attend.
